Why your acupuncturist asks about sleep, stress and home life

You came about your shoulder, so why the questions about sleep and home life? A wider history helps place a symptom in the context of your days.

I only came about my shoulder

It can be surprising. You book because one area hurts, and then the questions wander into how you sleep, what you eat, how active you are and what has been happening at home or work. Some people feel a little exposed; a partner waiting in reception might wonder why the appointment is running long.

Seeing the backdrop to an ache gives it meaning, and occasionally it uncovers something that warrants a separate medical check. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, uses those broader questions in Freshwater to understand the person as well as the pain.

Illustrative, Freshwater: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, sits beside a patient with curly red hair and fine needles in her forearm.

A simple timeline goes a long way

Before you visit, jot down a short history: the week it first appeared, what eases or aggravates it, and every remedy tried so far. Major life events belong there too, whether a new baby, a house move, caring for a parent or a change of job. Point out to Christine the part of daily life you most want back, perhaps sleeping through, lifting a toddler or concentrating at work.

  • When did it start, and what was happening then?
  • What eases it, and what aggravates it?
  • What have you already tried?

Bringing the wide view back to one plan

However wide the questions roam, they should circle back to a tidy plan for the thing that brought you in. Ask how progress will be judged and what would make Christine suggest a change or another assessment, such as a GP visit. Your goal might be modest and practical, and that is perfectly fine.

Explaining the questions at home

If someone at home asks why the appointment covered so much, you can explain that life outside the treatment room often shapes what happens inside the body. When you would like a consultation that looks at the bigger picture as well as the sore spot, Christine is available at the Freshwater clinic.
