A first acupuncture visit: questions to write down together

Sometimes the clearest list of questions is written at the kitchen bench with someone who knows you well. Ideas for a first acupuncture visit in Freshwater.

Two heads at the kitchen bench

A partner, flatmate or adult child often remembers things you would rather forget: the time you went pale at a blood test, the new tablet from last month, the pacemaker check coming up. That makes them excellent company when drafting questions for a first acupuncture appointment. Simple questions usually turn out to be the most useful ones.

Visitors to Freshwater who arrive with a list tend to leave with clearer answers. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, welcomes the folded piece of paper as a sign someone has thought carefully about their care.

Questions that earn a place on the list

  • Which parts of me will you examine, and what will you ask?
  • Is a heavy or tingly feeling normal, and for how long?
  • Are there choices besides needles for my situation?
  • If the room starts spinning, what do I do?
  • How did you choose these points, and when do we take stock?

Some details deserve a mention even if they seem unrelated. Pregnancy, the full contents of your medicine cabinet and any device living under your skin, a pacemaker or insulin pump included, belong in the conversation; let Christine decide what matters rather than filtering it yourself. Expect enough detail to decide with your eyes open, along with candour that every procedure carries some small chance of a problem.

From a symptom to something you can picture

Lists of questions sometimes skip the most personal item: what you hope life might look like. Perhaps you would like to get through a day at the desk with less discomfort, or simply understand what is happening, or find out whether a specialist opinion makes sense. Jot down the moment in your week you most want to change. Christine can then describe how a plan would be checked against that picture, and which signs might nudge her towards another route.

Bringing the list home again

Tick off what was answered and note anything still unclear, so the person who helped you write it can share in the outcome. Should your own list be ready, it can come with you to an unhurried first appointment at the Freshwater clinic.
