Grandma's cupping memories and today's treatment choices

7:33 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Many families carry memories of cupping from older generations. History adds richness, but today's choices still need to reflect your own health.

Stories passed down the generations

Long before cupping marks appeared on swimmers and social media, many families knew it from grandparents. A grandmother might recall glass cups warmed over a flame in a village kitchen, or a grandfather might describe the sensation with a laugh. Those memories are a reminder that cupping has a history stretching far beyond recent trends, and many older relatives enjoy being asked about it.

Over that history, several distinct methods developed. Some practitioners park the cups and leave them be; others slide them over a slick of oil; still other styles exist too. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, who offers cupping at the Freshwater clinic, sees these names as prompts for questions about purpose and experience rather than proof that one version outshines the rest.

Linking cupping to something you want to do

Share with Christine the activity you miss or find awkward. Maybe it is shoulder-checking in traffic, hanging washing or rejoining Saturday tennis. Agree on how that goal will be checked at your next visit. Family stories add colour, yet decisions must rest on your body as it is now, your own wishes and the way you react.

  • Which method is proposed, and why?
  • What should it feel like?
  • Which everyday task will we check next time?

Reviewing what really counts

After treatment, think about comfort and how your skin settled, alongside that everyday task. Circles on the skin are merely one clue. Pressing on depends on your first reason for coming, your reaction so far and the other routes Christine can sketch out.

Honouring the past, deciding for the present

Asking an older relative about their cupping memories can be a lovely conversation in its own right, and it may raise questions worth bringing along. When you would like to explore whether cupping fits your own needs today, Christine welcomes you in Freshwater.
