A sound bath voucher from a friend: what to ask first

7:30 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Received a sound bath as a gift? No water is involved. A few questions about format, volume and comfort help you enjoy it at your own pace.

An unexpected gift

A friend hands you a birthday card with a sound bath voucher inside, and your first thought might be whether to bring a towel. You will not need one. The name is a little misleading: you rest on a mat or in a chair while bowls, gongs or chimes ring out nearby, and stay completely dry. Sessions vary in running time, instruments and the stretches of silence between notes, so one experience may feel nothing like another.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers her Lane Cove sessions as a chance to unwind and is glad to answer questions before you book in with your voucher.

Illustrative, Lane Cove: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, plays a singing bowl beside a client lying on the couch, candles nearby.

Questions that make the session yours

Ask Christine how long it lasts, how loud it tends to get, whether you will lie down or sit, and whether you can step out or pause without fuss. Mention ringing in the ears, a dislike of loud noises, a stiff back or jumpy legs that hate lying flat. Choosing something you can comfortably manage beats wishing for some tearful breakthrough the first time.

  • How long, and how loud?
  • Lying, sitting or either?
  • Is stepping out midway okay?

Adjusting as you go

Gentler strikes, bowls placed further off, a cushioned seat or a quiet interval can all be requested. No particular feeling is required and nobody expects you to stay frozen in place. Let Christine know what feels right, and remember that pleasant relaxation is a different thing from care for a medical condition.

Thanking the friend who thought of you

A gift like this often says that someone noticed you needed a rest. Telling them afterwards how it went, honestly, can be a lovely way to reconnect. If you are holding a voucher and want to know more, Christine is happy to describe a session at the Lane Cove clinic before you decide.
