Choosing a psychotherapy approach the way you choose trust

7:13 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Finding the right therapeutic fit has more in common with building trust in any relationship than with picking a theory from a list.

Theories on a menu

Looking for psychological support can feel like reading a restaurant menu written in another language: psychodynamic, person-centred, cognitive, systemic, and many more. It is easy to freeze, worried about ordering the wrong thing. Happily, nobody expects you to walk in already knowing which school of therapy will suit you.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, whose qualifications also include psychotherapy, meets clients in Freshwater who often say the same thing: they simply want to feel understood. That instinct is a reasonable place to begin.

What fit actually feels like

Think about the relationships in your life where you can be honest. Fit in therapy has similar qualities. Do you feel safe enough to speak? Are ideas explained in words that land? Are the aims yours, or someone else's idea of what you ought to want? Christine is happy to describe how her way of working links to the things troubling you and how flexibly it can bend over time.

A collaborative relationship also leaves the door open. If another method, or a referral to a different practitioner, would serve you more fully, raising that is part of good care rather than a sign of failure.

Steering by your own compass

Room for your priorities is essential. You might want to understand a pattern with a partner, look at something that has felt stuck for years, or work out which small shifts would feel meaningful in your week. Agree on moments to step back and look at the work jointly, and on where support comes from if life throws something new at you mid-week.

  • Do I feel heard?
  • Does the plan make sense to me?
  • Can I say when something is not working?

Trust grows over time

Much like a friendship, a working relationship with a therapist develops gradually and can be talked about openly along the way. If you would like to explore whether working with Christine might suit you, one introductory session at the Freshwater clinic lets you sense the fit without obligation.
