Often the person drinking a herbal decoction is not the one cooking it. Here is how partners, adult children and carers can share the task without losing the details.
In many households the person who takes a herbal formula is not the person standing at the stove. A spouse, an adult child or a carer often ends up soaking, simmering and straining the herbs, and that hand-over is exactly where small details tend to slip.
Whenever cooking duties are split, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, likes everyone involved to read from one written page, a habit she keeps for every formula prescribed at the Lane Cove clinic. Raw ingredients can carry their own separate directions, and one formula's method can look nothing like another's. A quick verbal summary carried from the consultation room to the kitchen rarely survives intact.
If someone else will be cooking, consider asking Christine whether they can join part of the appointment, or photograph the instructions so both of you read identical wording. Points worth settling together include:
Relatives sometimes hold fond memories of how a grandmother prepared her herbs. Those stories deserve to be cherished, yet they should not override the directions written for this particular formula. If a familiar shortcut is suggested at home, check with Christine before anyone tries it.
Store the written steps beside the original packaging so whoever is cooking can find them without a phone call. Tell Christine each time your GP or a specialist alters your regular medicines, and pass that news on to the person helping at home as well. If something new crops up and the herbs seem a possible culprit, ring for guidance instead of letting a helpful relative quietly change the dose.
Sharing the work of a decoction can be a quiet act of affection between people who live together. A short conversation about who does what, and in which order, means the person drinking the brew and the person preparing it can each feel settled about every step.
