Moxa sticks, cones and more: forms worth asking about

7:32 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A moxa stick in a photo does not show how every session works. Asking which form is planned, and mentioning past smoke reactions, keeps things comfortable.

Not every moxa session looks like the photo

Search for moxibustion and you will probably see a glowing stick held above someone's skin. That is only one possibility. Mugwort gets rolled into sticks, pressed into small cones or teased into fluffy wool, and the warmth may reach the skin directly or through a holder. One photograph reveals little about what happens on your own couch.

At the Lane Cove clinic, people are welcome to quiz Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, about which version she is weighing up and the reasons behind that choice.

Your history with smoke matters

Think back to any time smoke or heat bothered you, even outside a clinic. Perhaps incense at a temple made you cough, a barbecue left your eyes streaming, or a hot-water bottle once marked your skin. Share those memories with Christine, because they help decide whether moxibustion is a reasonable option and which form might be gentler. Authentic-looking packaging and a powerful aroma are beside the point; personal suitability is what counts.

  • Which form of moxa is being considered?
  • Why that form for me?
  • How much smoke or scent should I expect?

Signals and aftercare agreed in advance

Settle beforehand on a word or gesture meaning too hot, and on how to look after the area once home. Patches of numbness, delicate skin and touchy airways should all come up. Instructions given to you are for you; a relative's routine or a clip online does not establish what your care should look like.

Sharing the smoky details at home

If you live with someone who has asthma or a sensitive nose, mention that too; moxa scent can linger on clothes. Bringing a spare jumper in a bag is a small courtesy to the people you hug afterwards. When you are ready to learn which form of moxibustion might be appropriate for you, Christine is happy to explain the options in Lane Cove.
