Singing bowls as a shared pause in a crowded week

For people who look after others, a few minutes following a singing bowl's tone can be a welcome pause. What to expect, and how to keep the session comfortable.

When everyone needs something from you

Parents of toddlers, adult children caring for ageing parents and anyone stretched by a demanding job can go a long time without a moment that is truly theirs. A singing bowl offers a gentle anchor: a note swells, wavers and gradually disappears. If sitting in complete silence makes you restless, following that note may be an easier doorway into stillness.

In Lane Cove, the bowl sessions run by Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, exist simply as a chance to unwind. You can appreciate the experience without believing a vibration repairs anything. Restfulness is one matter; untested stories about vibrational healing are another, and separating them helps you arrive with honest expectations.

Arranging the room around you

Have a word with Christine beforehand about noise sensitivity, how loud you would like the bowls, and whether sitting or lying feels more comfortable. Throughout, you can shift, talk or call it a day. Perhaps the instruments should sit further back, a bolster could support your knees, or a raised hand might mean you would like a break.

No particular emotion is expected of you. Drowsiness, idle thoughts about dinner or simply hearing the room are all ordinary, and wriggling is perfectly fine.

Talking about it, or not

Some pairs of friends enjoy comparing notes over coffee afterwards; other people prefer to keep the experience to themselves. Both are fine. The point is that the pause feels manageable and that you see it as a pleasant rest, not a remedy for an illness. Anything health-related that is worrying you is worth raising with your GP too.

Carving out half an hour

If a soft, adjustable sound session appeals during a heavy season of caring or work, Christine is happy to describe how a visit to the Lane Cove clinic could be shaped around your comfort.
