A friend breathed easier after gua sha: what that can't tell you

A friend says gua sha helped them breathe more freely. New or unexplained breathlessness, though, needs medical attention before any relaxation approach.

A heartfelt story shared over dinner

A friend describes how, after a gua sha session during a stressful patch, they felt they could breathe more freely. It is a sincere account, and it may have been a meaningful moment for them. But one person's experience is not a guide to why somebody else is short of breath. Fresh or puzzling shortness of breath belongs with a doctor before anything else, however calm or busy life has been.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, who offers gua sha at the Freshwater clinic, is careful to separate the relaxation side of body work from any symptom that deserves a doctor's assessment.

Being precise about the breathing change

When you talk with Christine about stress and tension in your body, say whether the breathing problem started lately, has dragged on for a while or arrives with company, such as chest pain, a cough, swelling in the legs or dizziness. A crowded diary does not prove stress is to blame. Good planning begins by distinguishing a goal of relaxing tight shoulders from a symptom that needs investigating by your GP. If breathing becomes suddenly difficult, call 000.

  • Is the breathing change new or long-standing?
  • Are there other symptoms alongside it?
  • Has a doctor assessed it yet?

Watching how your skin recovers

If gua sha does go ahead for muscle tension, report any lingering soreness, irritation or unusual bruising before another session. The technique should suit your situation, not a photograph of the expected colour. Christine can then discuss continuing, changing the approach or choosing another option.

Listening to friends, looking after yourself

Friends share stories because they care, and you can honour that while still putting your own health first. Should breathing worries have been checked medically and you would like to talk about tension and relaxation, Christine is available at the Freshwater clinic.
