Red or purple patches after gua sha can prompt worried questions at home or at work. Here is a calm, honest way to talk about those patches with the people who notice them.
You change into a singlet at the gym, or your partner notices your back while you are getting ready for bed, and the question comes straight away: what happened to you? Gua sha can leave red or purplish patches that look alarming to anyone unfamiliar with the practice, and it helps to have a calm explanation ready.
Classical descriptions of gua sha sometimes talk about blood, stagnation and meridians. Taken literally, that language can confuse or worry the people around you. Within its own tradition it explains a way of thinking; it is not a diagnosis, and coloured skin is no sign that a disease has been pulled from the body.
Before you begin, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can describe at the Lane Cove clinic what a session is meant to address and how your skin might respond. Raise any tendency to bruise easily, recent unexplained skin changes, or medicines that affect clotting. Having that information makes it much easier to answer a partner, a parent or a colleague honestly.
You might say something like: these are expected skin marks from a traditional scraping technique; they usually settle on their own, and they do not mean I am injured or seriously unwell. If anything about them worries you, I will check with my practitioner. Being open in this way often eases concern far more than a hurried change of subject.
Ahead of any repeat visit, let Christine hear about soreness that outstayed its welcome or bruising that looked odd. Together you can decide to continue, tweak the technique or pick a different option. Skin colour should never become the target.
The people who notice your marks are usually the ones who care about you most. Seeing their questions as a chance for connection, rather than as an intrusion, can turn a moment of worry into a better shared understanding of the care you have chosen.
