Herbal Medicine and the Family Dinner Table

Food advice that comes with a herbal prescription affects everyone who eats with you. Here is how to work out which guidance truly applies and keep family meals simple.

Meals are rarely a solo event. When one person in a household begins a course of Chinese herbal medicine, questions about food quickly spread to partners, children and anyone else who shares the cooking. Before long, a cousin has added a warning about cold drinks and a neighbour has a list of things to avoid.

Separating your advice from everyone else's

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers herbal consultations at the Freshwater clinic, and the most helpful food conversation with her centres on your own prescription. Guidance passed between friends may come from a completely different formula, or from a tradition that was never meant to apply to everybody.

When you raise diet with Christine, it helps to mention:

  • any allergies or intolerances;
  • how meals usually work in your home, including who cooks;
  • times when eating regularly or well is difficult for you.

You can then ask a simple sorting question about each suggestion: is this essential, is it only for a short period, or does it reflect a traditional preference you are free to weigh up?

Keeping shared meals workable

Crossing out a whole column of favourite dishes in one go, with no clear purpose, can strain both your nourishment and the rhythm of family life. Advice ought to be realistic for the way you actually live, and it should sit comfortably alongside guidance from your GP or dietitian. If a restriction would mean cooking separate dinners every night, say so; there may be a simpler path.

Paperwork that stays with the jar

Keep the product name, dose and review date with the original packaging, and tell Christine if another practitioner adjusts your medicines. When an odd reaction makes you suspect the formula, check in with Christine instead of trialling a different dose on your own.

Explaining your plan to the people you eat with can turn a potential source of friction into teamwork. When everyone at the table understands which changes are genuinely needed, shared dinners can stay relaxed while you follow the guidance that belongs to you.
